From Brokenness to Purpose: The Story Behind the Movement

Have you ever felt unseen, unworthy, or completely broken by life’s unexpected storms? Have you ever wondered if your pain could be turned into purpose?

In 2002, I found myself in that exact place—a devastating heartbreak left me feeling like an outcast, abandoned and lost. Everything I had built, everything I had poured my heart into, came crashing down. For years, I felt like I was living in a valley of despair, struggling to find meaning in the pain.

But little did I know, God was working in the unseen.

As I walked through those dark days, something began to stir in me. I started to notice other women who were hurting just like I was—women carrying invisible burdens, suffering silently through heartbreak, loss, and unfulfilled dreams. Women who, like me, needed more than just survival; they needed renewal, strength, and sisterhood.

"Carole, stop seeking validation from the world. Start seeking validation from Me."

That single revelation transformed everything. My pain became my platform. My trials became my testimony. What began as a season of brokenness turned into a movement of healing, faith, and empowerment.

By 2006, I began gathering with women in my home village in Cameroon—meeting in kitchens, under trees, wherever we could—to pray, share, and uplift each other. We studied the Word of God, leaned on one another, and began to rebuild from the inside out.

We didn’t know it at the time, but we were planting the seeds of what would become Women of Distinction Worldwide.

From One Gathering to a Global Movement

When I arrived in Oregon in 2008, I thought I had left that chapter behind. I was focused on settling into a new country, searching for jobs, and simply finding my way.

But the burden in my heart wouldn’t let me go.

The vision of creating a community of empowered, faith-filled women kept flooding my thoughts—while I was grocery shopping, filling out paperwork, walking down the street. I resisted at first. “Lord, how can I do this? I have no money, no connections, no idea where to start!”

But God had already made a way.

Through a divine connection, I was reunited with an old high school classmate, and with her help and the support of a few faithful women, we held our first Women of Distinction Retreat in March 2009 in Eugene, Oregon.

That first retreat had just 7 women from 4 different countries. Seven sisters, gathering in faith, prayer, and purpose.

Fast forward to 2018—our retreat grew to over 80 women from 15 countries coming together to be refreshed, empowered, and equipped for impact.

What started with nothing—no money, no contacts—has become a global movement, touching lives across continents.

This is the power of faith. This is the power of sisterhood.
